Prof. Chen is the chairman and a distinguished professor of Thoracic Surgery Department affiliated to Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center. Meanwhile, he is also served as the director of Thoracic Oncology Institute, Multiple Disciplinary Team (MDT) on Thoracic Malignancy and Lung Cancer Prevention Center.


He is a pioneer in the innovation of traditional surgical concept, advocating “Minimally Invasive Surgery 3.0”. He is firstly indicating that intraoperative frozen section is capable of guiding sub-lobar dissection for early-stage lung adenocarcinoma. These innovations contribute to a step forward into personalized surgical treatment strategies and improved survival for lung cancer patients. In addition, based on the screening of a large population, GGO featured nodules were found to be the most prevalent type of lung cancer in China. His team is one of the first to prove that lung cancer harboring RET fusion is a novel molecular subtype and descript the molecular subtype landscape of non-smoking lung cancer. His team for the first time pointed out the optimal surgical type and scope of lymph node dissection for middle-lower esophageal squamous carcinoma. 


He is the vice chief editor of the Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology and an editorial board member of various other publications, including the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Prof. Chen is the principal investigator of over 10 programs, including two key programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has authored more than 200 SCI papers in academic journals, including Cancer Cell, JCO and CCR. Innovative findings in 17 of his papers have been cited in 11 international guidelines of lung cancer such as ASCO, ESMO, ACCP and IASLC. In 2012, Prof. Chen was awarded Shanghai Outstanding Academic Leader, after sequential awards from the science and technology prize of CACA (rank 1), Shanghai Science and Technology Development Prize (rank1,2,3), Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Prize(rank 1), Chinese Medical Science and Technology Prize(rank 1), Military Medical Achievements Prize (rank 1), Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Prize (rank 2),The third national famous doctor "outstanding building title.
